Food Safety matters: Wooden ice cream sticks

Wooden ice cream sticks are safe to use, as long as they are food-grade certified that are sourced from reputable suppliers who meet Australian food safety regulations.

Wooden sticks must comply with Australian food safety standards, ensuring they are made from non-toxic materials suitable for food contact. If non-food-grade wooden sticks are used, there is a risk of contamination or ingestion of harmful substances. Or if wooden sticks are improperly stored or handled, they could become contaminated with bacteria or allergens, which may pose a risk to children’s or the elderly’s health.

Once purchased, store wooden sticks in a clean, dry environment, away from contamination. Handling them should follow proper food safety hygiene practices, such as washing your hands before hand, using clean utensils or gloves.

How to store these Frozen Yoghurt Pops safely

These Avocado Chocolate Frozen Yoghurt Pops can be served as a snack or dessert anytime throughout summer. Keeping these homemade pops on hand in the freezer is perfect for a warm summer afternoon. But what’s the best food-safe way to store them?

5 food safety tips to store Frozen Yoghurt pops

  1. Use Airtight Containers: Store homemade popsicles in an airtight, freezer-safe container or wrap them individually in plastic wrap or freezer bags to prevent freezer burn and contamination from other foods.

  2. Label and Date: Clearly label the containers, wrapped Pops or freezer bags with the date the Avo Chocolate FroYo Pops were made. This helps you keep track of their freshness and ensures they are consumed within a safe time frame.

  3. Freezer Temperature: Ensure your freezer is set at or below -18°C, which is the ideal temperature to keep frozen food safe from bacterial growth.

  4. Storage Duration: Homemade popsicles can be safely stored in the freezer for up to 6-8 weeks. After this time, their texture and flavour may degrade, even though they may still be safe to eat if frozen properly.

  5. Avoid Refreezing: If a FroYo Pop partially thaws, do not refreeze it, as this can lead to changes in texture and increase the risk of contamination.
